Cooperative climate change adaptation in the Sierra Madre and the coast of Chiapas

Initial situation 

The project promoted the design and implementation of an Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) strategy in watersheds in coastal regions. The strategy prioritized the protection of natural resources while ensuring the region’s sustainable economic development. The project partners assessed the region’s vulnerability to climate change and divided it into risk zones according to exposure to extreme weather events. Based on this assessment, they planned and implemented appropriate adaptation measures for each zone. As a result, the impacts of climate change on ecosystems were reduced while preserving the livelihoods of the population.

Objectives

Finance Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) measures implemented in watersheds in a sustainable manner through the global carbon market and a regional public investment strategy.  
 
Raise public awareness of the effects of climate change on ecosystems in coastal regions.  

Promote cooperation with local structures and ensure that authorities fulfilled their responsibilities. 

Activities

  • Development of strategic climate change adaptation plans for priority watersheds with the active participation of local communities.  
  • Implementation of studies and assessments in sub-watersheds and watersheds to ensure greater impact and effectiveness of interventions on the ground. 
  • Development of an integrated landscape management model for the region based on information from the studies.  
  • Creation of the Water Seed Fund, a long-term financing mechanism currently hosted by FONCET and aimed at sustainable productive projects.
