Initial situation 

The project explored the potential for carbon sequestration and identified financing opportunities, such as REDD mechanisms (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) and payments for ecosystem services. It expanded the area under protection and promoted the reforestation and restoration of degraded areas. During implementation, pilot strategies and measures for agriculture, sustainable forestry, and ecotourism were promoted. In addition, the management plans of specific protected areas were reviewed in collaboration with local residents, who had previously been trained to analyze and monitor ecosystems and climate conditions, and equipment was provided to strengthen their management.

Objectives

Support CONANP in implementing and further developing its climate strategy in specific protected areas within the forested and highly biodiverse ecological corridor of the Sierra Madre Oriental.

Activities

•  Support for the development and implementation of Mexico’s climate strategy for protected areas. 
• Development of approaches and instruments and exchange of knowledge to assist protected area managers in successfully implementing strategies and achieving adaptation and mitigation objectives. 
• Assistance in the development of a fire management plan. 
• Implementation of a monitoring system to collect climate and biodiversity data.
