Context
Forests are home to a wide variety of species, serve as carbon sinks, and perform many other functions that need to be preserved. The Bonn Challenge is the most important international initiative for forest restoration. The project uses the Bonn Challenge Barometer of Progress to develop a system for documenting and publishing progress toward the Bonn Challenge and for informing donors and partners about the status of implementation. The Barometer is being developed in six pilot countries and implemented worldwide. The methodology is used to measure progress in political and budgetary commitments, technical knowledge, on-the-ground implementation, and carbon benefits. Experiences from the pilot countries are published, while the implementation status of the Bonn Challenge, success stories, and reports are disseminated through high-level public campaigns.
Objectives
Participating countries have set the goal of restoring around 150 million hectares of forest by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030.
