Initial situation
This project improves the conservation of biodiversity in coastal and marine areas of the Gulf of California and promotes the sustainable use of biological resources. To this end, it works with local partners to lay the foundations and establish a communication strategy—particularly a shared vision—in support of a coordinated approach to conserving the region’s biological resources. It also strengthens the capacities of protected area authorities, standardizes different biodiversity monitoring systems, integrates climate change information into regional conservation activities, and promotes the development of partnership networks among protected area authorities.
Special-use zones and “no-take” zones help address the impacts of industrial fishing and increase the scope for action of protected area authorities. Integrating strategic conservation principles for coastal and marine biodiversity into sustainable tourism creates alternative sources of income, especially for local fishers. Examples of successful local initiatives will be collected to serve as models and a basis for developing new project activities, and will be disseminated throughout the region.
