Initial situation  
 
A key challenge for climate policy in Mexico is reducing emissions in the energy sector. In order to take advantage of the country’s high levels of solar radiation, the project promoted the use of solar collectors, thereby contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Mexican households. To this end, an investment subsidy was obtained for the purchase of 19,000 solar collectors, managed through a mortgage from INFONAVIT, a housing finance institution.

The project provided training to improve expertise in installation and maintenance services for the systems. Information events on solar collectors were held to raise awareness among institutions and potential customers about these technologies and explain financing options. In this way, low-income households gained access to an innovative technology that would otherwise have been difficult to obtain because of the high initial investment required. 

Objectives  
 
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Mexican households. 
 Expand access to solar thermal energy systems for low-income Mexican families. 
 

Activities 

  • Implementation of minimum installation quality standards.  
  • Training of 5,000 people to work as inspection personnel or technical installers.  
  • Subsidies were granted for 19,013 solar collectors, enabling savings of 97,800 t CO2e over their lifetime. 
  • Dissemination of materials and organization of information events in 15 states across the country.  
  • Two pilot projects were completed to ensure installation quality.
