Sonora presents projects that contribute to the NDC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Federal states in northern Mexico exchanged climate change-related experiences and identified synergy potentials with the aim of specifying state-level contributions to Mexico\u00b4s NDC targets.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The regional workshop “Strengthening Subnational Capacities and Impacts on the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)” was held in the city of Hermosillo in the federal state of Sonora, Mexico, on 5th<\/sup> and 6th<\/sup> of October 2017. This is the second event of a series of four workshops supported by the Mexican Federal Government via Mexico’s Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT<\/a>) and the Mexican National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC<\/a>), with the support of Deutsche Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ<\/a>).<\/p>\n

These workshops provide federal states with tools that support them in effectively implementing and monitoring mitigation and adaptation actions within the framework of the Paris Agreement. The Sonora workshop brought together 40 representatives with key positions in ministries, institutions and academia from the states Sonora, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Baja California, Coahuila, Chihuahua y Baja California Sur. Host-state Sonora was represented by members of its executive and legislative branch. The event was co-organized by the Commission for Ecology and Sustainable Development of Sonora (CEDES<\/a>) and the Federal Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Searching mechanisms for synergies among states<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The event featured plenary sessions, presentations of success stories by the region\u00b4s federal states as well as interactive session which were\u00a0facilitated by the association \u201cSolutions to Environmental Legislation and Policy\u201d (POLEA<\/a>). Of particular interest were the presentations on the Sonora Green Growth Strategy, the Adaptation to Climate Change Project of Flora and Fauna Protected Areas of the Islands of the Gulf of California presented by the National Commission on Natural Protected Areas (CONANP<\/a>), the Climate Change Program of Baja California<\/a> and the School Energy Efficiency Project of Sinaloa.<\/p>\n

During the workshop, participating states were given the opportunity to strengthen synergies and to reflect on key steps to coordinate climate change efforts in Northern Mexico; thereby helping to contribute to the country\u00b4s international climate goals.<\/p>\n
