As explained by Dr. Lorenzo Alvarez Filip:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cThe damage caused in six months by white syndrome equals the coral mortality over the last 40 years in the Mexican Caribbean.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For this reason, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/conanp\">CONANP<\/a>) \u2013 together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmyl.unam.mx\/puerto_morelos\/uves\/en\/node\/71\">UNAM-BARCO LAB\u2019s Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthyreefs.org\/cms\/\">Healthy Reefs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giz.de\/en\/worldwide\/33041.html\">GIZ<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/iki-alliance.mx\/en\/portafolio\/ecosystem-based-adaptation-to-climate-change-in-cooperation-with-the-private-sector-in-mexico-adaptur\/\">ADAPTUR<\/a> project, the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (<a href=\"https:\/\/fmcn.org\/\">FMCN<\/a>), the <a href=\"https:\/\/marfund.org\/en\/\">MAR Fund<\/a>, the Central American Integration System\u2019s Development and Environment Commission (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sica.int\/ccad\/\">CCAD-SICA<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mx.undp.org\/content\/mexico\/es\/home\/\">UNDP<\/a>\u2019s GEF-Resilience project \u2013 called for the design of an Action Plan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17462\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17462\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17462 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iki-alliance.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/RivieraMaya5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iki-alliance.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/RivieraMaya5.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/iki-alliance.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/RivieraMaya5-360x119.jpg 360w, https:\/\/iki-alliance.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/RivieraMaya5-768x254.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iki-alliance.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/RivieraMaya5-700x232.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 ADAPTUR\/Photo: Mariana Rodr\u00edguez Aguilera. Aerial view of the Riviera Maya.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On March 8, about 70 key stakeholders defined strategic actions to implement in the short-, medium- and long-term aimed at improving tourism practices, the integrated management of the coastal zone, and water and fisheries management.<\/p>\n<p>Coral reefs are an important economic source for tourism. In Cozumel alone, diving generates an estimated $4.662 million pesos of direct benefit each year. White syndrome observed in corals.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the head of CONANP\u2019s regional office for the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula and Mexican Caribbean, Cristopher Gonz\u00e1lez Baca, closed the event with the following reflection:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cWe need to make alliances and act together to recover the health of the reefs and the economic and social benefits that they produce for the region.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/iki-alliance.mx\/en\/portafolio\/ecosystem-based-adaptation-to-climate-change-in-cooperation-with-the-private-sector-in-mexico-adaptur\/\">ADAPTUR<\/a> project provides technical assistance to the tourism sector for adopting Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) solutions in Mexican territory and for its investment decisions.
