In four years of trilateral cooperation for sustainable housing in Mexico, the Mexican government has supported the acquisition of more than 83,860 houses according to NAMA standards. Two out of 10 houses are built according to NAMA standards leading to reduction of 47,000 tons of CO2.

Mexico, Germany and the United Kingdom have established themselves as important partners for the sustainable development of Mexico´s housing sector. The technical component of the project “NAMAFacility”, supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, has come to end by celebrating the achievements for sustainable housing in Mexico.

The past four years saw a reinforcement of the Table for Sustainable Housing , while sustainability criteria for different housing programs were approved and awareness-raising workshops and campaigns have been carried out at national level (“Mi casa es mi mundo” – My House is my World). Additionally, the involvement of housing developers has increased more than threefold in the past three years.

Moreover, Mexican families have benefited from having access to better housing with improved thermal insulation, yet at the same affordable cost. This, in turn, has allowed them to reduce their gas, electricity and water consumption and has therefore reduced their related expenses.

Notably, Mexico was the first country in the world to develop a NAMA focused on sustainable social housing, which is the reason why this NAMA is currently the most advanced NAMA in terms of its implementation and its technical design, in addition to being the first one financed by the “NAMA Facility” in Mexico. The financial component of the “NAMA Facility”, funded by the German Development Bank KfW and implemented in Mexico by the Federal Mortgage Society (Sociedad Hipotecaria Federal), will continue its operations and develop projects until 2020.

On 26th of October 2017, the closing ceremony of the technical component of the “NAMA Facility” was held at the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico City, celebrating the achievements of four years of cooperation for sustainable housing in Mexico. Among the three project countries, the future of Mexico´s housing policy, new programs on existing housing and the results of the last four years of cooperation were discussed. Participants included representatives of the Mexican government (including Infonavit and CONAVI), the German and the British embassies, and representatives of the private sector.

The “NAMA Facility” was conducted on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and the British Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Between 2012 and 2017, the project was implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the German Agency for International Cooperation, which carried out the technical component. The German development bank KfW was in charge of the financial component.
