Living Lakes: Biodiversity and Climate Change

The objective of the programme is to protect and restore lakes and wetlands, their surrounding landscapes, and their biodiversity in the 10 participating countries and beyond. The focus is on capacity-building activities for all stakeholders involved in lake and wetland management, including local authorities, regional administrations, and civil society, in order to reduce the impacts of agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and other activities on aquatic ecosystems. The programme also develops and promotes innovative techniques for the protection and restoration of lakes and wetlands, including wastewater treatment, pollution prevention, restoration, invasive species management, and biodiversity-friendly agriculture.

Thirdly, the programme promotes the dissemination of transferable results and lessons learned at the regional, national, and global levels through the International Living Lakes Network, as well as improved implementation of lake protection legislation and management plans by empowering civil society and strengthening its participation in stakeholder consultations.
