Presenting the success story of the Fondo Peninsula Yucatan (Yucatan Peninsula Fund)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In order to augment Mexico\u2019s\u00a0 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and accomplish the goals aspired to, trained staff is required in the states which develop and implement measures for mitigating and adapting to climate change. These measures must have impacts that are significant and measurable as well as financially feasible.<\/p>\n

To that end, the Mexican government, through its Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT <\/a>\u00a0in its Spanish-language acronym) and the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC<\/a>), with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)<\/a> GmbH, have continued to strengthen capacities in the country\u2019s regions.\u00a0 On November 23 and 24, 2017, the Third Regional Workshop of the South-Southeastern Region was held in the city of Merida, Yucatan State. The title of the workshop was \u201cStrengthening Sub-National Capacities and their Contributions to the Nationally Determined Contribution\u201d.<\/p>\n

The workshop included participation from representatives of six states: Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, and Yucatan, in addition to representatives from civic organizations and academic bodies, as well as government officials from delegation of SEMARNAT in Yucatan and from the agency\u2019s central offices. All in all, 35 participants attended, including the Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development and Environment\u00a0of Yucatan\u00a0(SEDUMA)<\/a>\u00a0and the Under Secretary of Environmental Planning and Policies of SEMARNAT<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The event provided a dynamic space for discussion, enabling the participating states to present their success stories and to share experiences and lessons learned.\u00a0 It also allowed them to create synergies in the Mexican south-southeastern regions in order to duplicate projects that have had a positive impact and to utilize resources efficiently and effectively.<\/p>\n

This was the third of four workshops that are planned to be held in Mexico\u2019s interior regions in 2017.\u00a0 With this event, 60% of the states have been trained to enable them to contribute to fulfilling the NDC.<\/p>\n
